One single night of light during sleep. And the consequences show up the very next day.

A 2022 study published in PNAS showed that even a single night of exposure to moderate light during sleep — 100 lux, about the brightness of an ordinary room — raises heart rate, alters heart rate variability, and increases insulin resistance the next morning. In healthy adults.

Background

For years, large population studies had hinted that living surrounded by artificial light at night is linked to worse health. What was missing was direct experimental proof of what actually happens inside the body when there is light during sleep. This Northwestern study measured exactly that, under controlled lab conditions.

What the study looked at

20 healthy young adults were split into two groups: one night in very dim light (under 3 lux) and one night in ordinary room light (100 lux). The researchers tracked heart rate, heart rate variability, melatonin levels, and insulin resistance both during and after the exposure.

What they found

A single night of 100 lux during sleep produced a sustained rise in heart rate, greater activation of the sympathetic nervous system — the body's alert system — and higher insulin resistance the next morning. The main driver wasn't suppressed melatonin but that sympathetic activation: the light kept the body in a state of physiological alertness throughout the night, even though the participants never consciously noticed it.

Study limitations

The study was conducted in adults, not infants. The exposure level was 100 lux — more than a typical nightlight would give off. The authors note that larger samples and different wavelengths of light are needed to confirm the exact mechanisms at work.
