Your baby's body clock is already running. And light is already setting it.

In 2003, a Yale pediatrician documented something sleep consultants rarely explain: a baby's circadian system is up and running before birth, responds to light from the very first weeks, and is significantly more sensitive than an adult's.

Background

Most circadian research had been done in adults. Rivkees, a pediatric endocrinologist at Yale, carried that science into the world of the infant — mapping how the circadian system develops starting in the womb, and the part light plays in that process.

What the study looked at

A systematic review of how the circadian system develops in human and non-human primates, including evidence from studies of premature babies exposed to controlled light cycles. The goal was to understand when the body clock starts working and how it responds to light during the first weeks and months of life.

What they found

The suprachiasmatic nucleus — the master clock — is present from the middle of gestation. The circadian system responds to light from very early, premature stages. Premature babies exposed to regular light cycles settle into sleep-wake patterns synced to the 24-hour day sooner. After birth, strong sleep-wake rhythms and hormone secretion generally develop from around two months on. A baby's lens, clearer than an adult's, lets more blue light reach the back of the eye — making the system even more sensitive to the part of the spectrum that suppresses melatonin (around 460nm).

What this means for you

That your baby is not "too little for light to matter." Just the opposite. Their system is more reactive than yours. Study limitations

This is a review, not an original experimental study. The data on babies' specific sensitivity to particular wavelengths are limited — most spectrum studies were run in adults. But the evidence that an infant's circadian system reacts to light in general is solid.
